Dalglish has been interviewed for the programme and has said the kickoff should have been delayed. Personally I remember standing in the leppings land that season watching West Ham, which made it all the scary when it was screened across living rooms throughout England, my first feeling was the scousers were kicking off again, then the realisation that this wasn't hooliganism. Lots has been said about Hillsborough, I lived in Sheffield for 7 years (not in 89) and my ex-doris worked at the Northern General Hospital where most of the victims were taken, they still keep a diary from the time, lots of ex-footballers coming into the ICU to see fans etc... This really did start the whole 'scouse victimisation' thing, it could have happened to anyone team and was waiting to happen.

Which makes the comments about ticketless fans charging the gates a little bit staggering if you went to games supporting West Ham back in the 80's. I think the scousers had the publics sympathy up until they started occupying the nations grief and 'victim mentality' on a daily basis.

What has always angered me and, if possible, made me hate the mickeys more is their absolute insistance none of it was their fault. "I know hundreds of ticketless fans, drunk as skunks, charged the open gate and poured into the stand, crushing to death our own fans....but it was all the fault of the stewards for leaving the gate ajar; the fault of the police for not stopping us; the fault of the police chief for ordering the gate to be completely opened; the fault of the FA and police for demanding the club put fences around the front of the stand......" No, it was the fault of the hundreds of ticketless, drunk fans who barged their way into the stadium, exacerbated by the subsequent actions of the police and stewards... I've heard some people travel hundredsof miles to arrive early, intent on filling themselves up on real ale served at room temperature and playing pool in city centre pubs and generally winding up the locals. Then they turn up at the ground staggering around, talking bollocks, giving unsolicited legal advice and giving the Old Bill lip, even after they have been warned once. After they get nicked and spend the night in the cells to sober up they come home and bleat about how unfair it all is, how they are the victims and that their civil rights have been abused. Fucking scousers.
