Ralph Milne wrote: I concur, Ralph. We beat Argentina last time we played them in a World Cup (and in the 2005 friendly), and their team has declined rapidly since then - they've been appaling in the qualifiers. They don't have any decent keepers (first choice, Carrizo, is reserve at Lazio), and they're serious lacking in defenders, just a bunch of hoofers, highlighted by the fact that Heinze is first choice - at centre back! Since Riquelme's fallen out with Maradona and resigned from national team, they've got nothing creative in midfield, and are still relying on Veron who'll be 36 at World Cup (tho, to be fair, he played ok yesterday and was easily Argentina's best player). Jonas Gutierrez on the left reminds me of Etherington - runs fast with the ball, but can't beat a defender for skill. What they do have, of course, is Messi, whose brilliance disguises all the other weaknesses. Maradona's Argentina have got one tactic- get the ball to Messi as quick as possible and see if he can win the match single-handedly - although, admitedly, that might actually work for them in the World Cup (if they qualify!). Brazil, on the other hand, have an excellent team /squad IMHO, strong in every department, especially goalkeeper (Julio Ceasr) and defence, and a teactically astute manager in Dunga. It won't be 'jogo bonito', which is the reason a lot of Brazilians don't like Dunga, but I wouldn't be surprised if they win theWorld Cup again. Agree with Monk and Ralph that England will do well this time. Being winter in South Africa will help.

There's one national team with a much greater history of choking than England, and that's Spain.
Never put it past them to fuck up a knockout match they should win. And the tabloids always go stupid before every major tournament - hence they can be ignored completely. You just can't overstate the importance of Capello. For the first time since Ramsey there is a manager who will never be undermined by egos in the squad. I'm not saying we will win it - but for the first time in 40 years we won't be starting with a weak manager in charge (and I include Robson in that - it was "player power" that got him playing with a sweeper in 1990 after a terrible start) |

Ralph
would this be the same Spain that choked at the Euros last year or have I missed something? Up to last year I would have agreed with you, but they have to be in with a very decent shout for next year. At the end of the day it will come down to the usual 8-(max)10 suspects with an outsider thrown in for good measure. At this stage don't fancy Argentina, Italy, Portugal nor France's chances much. I like Portugal, but would fucking laugh if the second best player in the world did not make it.... |

OK lads here it is. A proper opinion from a bloke that knows his football, for sure.
1. It will be one of Brasil, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Spain or England. 2. England are currently fourth best team in the world. 3. The French and any African country will not win it. Shilts was terrible in Italia '90 penalty shoot-out but I agree with Moxy, at that time he was indeed 'the safest hands in soccer', for sure. |

Deserved winners of Euro 2008 and a joy to watch. But they could revert to type in a one-off match. Will Del Bosque be as strong as Aragones at keeping the factions pulling the same way? In a way I hope they do keep it up. |

The way to beat Spain is the same approach Chelsea took to Barcelona. Boring bully boy tactics.

I still think we should have subbed off Shilton in Italia 90 once it went to penalties.
