So nobody else finds that rather odd then?

If he was a bird he'd be Alex Curran.
Ultra-high maintenance - and you're sure he must be worth all the money somehow... |

Not in the slightest. He's got all the quality in the World, he always - ALWAYS - scores goals, he's free, he's still got some years left in him -
ok he's lost some pace (not all, as some would have you believe) and he's had fitness troubles, but I bet they keep him fitter than Newcastle did
(helped by not playing every week). Good free signing for Man Utd who lack a genuine goalscorer and a great move for Owen.
Good luck to him, I like him and want him with England at the World Cup (should we qualify). |

Rather fitting that OTB gives the eulogy for Owen considering his avatar

Owen will be training Sir Alex's horses sooner rather than later.
Probably. |

Lot of press describing it as Ferguson's last gamble, but I don't see what Man U have got to lose?
No transfer fee, 1 yr rolling contract, relatively low basic wage, which increases depending on number of appearences... He still looked pretty good to me when he scored those goals against us last season. What was odd were the stories linking him to Hull or Stoke? I'd like him to do well because I think England need someone like him at World Cup, even if it is just to come off the bench, and also because I still want to believe there's a place in the modern game for old fashioned strikers. The irony of Ferguson signing Owen is that Man U's formation and tactics over last couple of seasons are often used as an example of how the game's changed, how there's no place at the top level of the game for strikers who only score goals etc.

"how there's no place at the top level of the game for strikers who only score goals etc."
Moxy also posted an article from some hack who also put forward this case. I ain't saying the game ain't changed. But that is the biggest load of bollocks ever. |

Not saying you're right or you're wrong Flasho - but now is not the time for such judgements.
This is the man, don't forget, who paid £28million for Juan Sebastian Veron... |

I think it comes down to the fact that Man U have the resources money wise and squad wise to have Owen, whereas we cant afford to have have a striker out long
term again (and lets be honest there is more than a fair chance owen will go down) they can take that chance we cannot

Ferguson wasn't necassarily wrong for spending £28m on Veron, as he was one of the top 3-5 players in the world at the time. Truly world class.
Just turns out that despite having a promising start, he was a bit shit for em... Anyway, Monday morning, whacking a score on Owen top scorer next season. |

Players like Ashton,Bellamy, Dyer....
But you're right, if you can afford to have this luxury, money and squad wise, why not. A fit Owen will score shitloads of goals and ManU (probably) can keep him fit by playing him every other game or so. |

A Man of Constant Sorrow wrote:Not to mention Djemba Djemba, Alan Smith, Kleberson, Taibi, Bellion & Bosnich among others. But he did take a gamble on Cantona - arguably, the best pound for pound (as Monk would say) signing in the history of the Prem? Strange thing about Veron is that he was recently the subject of an hour long 'This is your life'-type documentary in Argentina, in which he talked about his two "great and successful" seasons at Manchester, winning the Prem league title in both of them. (He was injured for his whole time at Chelsea, Robbo) Verons's currently in outstanding form for his home town club Estudiantes, who have reached the final of the Libertadores (S.American equilavent of Champions league) and is still the fulcrum of Argentina's midfield. World Class player in my humble... I can only guess that Ferguson bought Veron because he wanted to change the system away from 4-4-2, and play with one up in Europe, with Veron playing behind the striker (they hadn't been doing well in Europe in the seasons previous to his purchase), but players like Keane & Beckham, for example, failed to adapt to this style of play, just as much as Veron failed to adapt to English football? So, then Ferguson just abandoned the idea? But over time, Ferguson has evolved and changed along with the rest of football,. moving away from 4-4-2. Maybe Veron would do well in the current Man U side?

Joey Deacon wrote: You think? Will Ferguson start him alongside Rooney then? leaving Berbatov on the bench, or continue to play Rooney wide and have Owen up front on his own? That also assumes that the Elephant really is in the room, and that Ferguson won't have the funds to buy the replacements for Tevez and Ronaldo. I don't see much in his time at Newcastle to suggest that he is going to be firing them in for fun and able to start every game, and with Ronaldo gone, Giggs and Scholes another year older I'm not seeing a ready made supplier for him. I wonder how Rooney will cope with being the main man now Ronaldo has left, he always struck me as being a player who doesn't thrive on responsibillity, and may well lose his head if things aren't going his way. |
