I think that this is Allardyce's percentage game in action.  What your statement fails to realise is that Allardyce thinks that over 46 games 5 outfield on the bench will get more points than 4.  Over a season you're unlikely to lose a keeper more than once.  That might cost 0 points, 1, 2 or 3.  So if you can get an extra point in the other 45 games due to having an extra outfield player it might have paid off... worst case you still only need to convert two draws into two extra wins to be better off.
