I have no issues with Noble taking the ball off Reid, Collins or Tomkins, just outside our box, my gripe is what he does with the ball after this, many times all he did was either pass it back or pass it to Adrian for the long punt upfront, the main reason why is because he is facing goal and the Spurs midfield had pushed up on him so he could not turn and face the way he wanted to play.
So, taking the ball of the centre half is not wrong if the player and the team can handle playing it from front to back effectively, Arsenal and Liverpool are great examples of this, the Pirlo example is a great one too, but Andre has the luxury of being in a team of players (be it Italy, AC Milan or Juventus) who made runs that he saw and thus made those eye-of-the-needle passes that others can't.
Noble unfortuunately does not have that consistency in his locker and I doubt very much at this stage in his playing career he will develop it, so in my opinion him collecting the ball in a team of static or less mobile players is really ineffective, as his options with it are very much limited, Noble won't hit a 50 yard crossfield pass, cos Ginge can do that (badly), so he has the square ball to Demel/JOB or Cresswell option, who either pass up the line to Vaz or Downing or infield to Nolan, but by that 3rd pass we have not crossed the halfway line, so what's the point. Other teams play quicker with more players playing lots of short passes and there is constant movement so more options, with us we have erm?
I know our alternatives are the long punt up front, but if you watch most of our game it stems from losing (not conceding) possession from such a punt and pressing high to win the ball back.
Worked for Barcelona and Chelsea in previous seasons and Liverpool last, so why not us this?
