AMoCS years ago came up with a rule of thumb, which is act on here how you would if you were in a pub with people you maybe didn't know all that well. That doesn't mean be PC, it means that this site is not www.aryannation.com. But neither is it Mumsnet.
I try to bite my lip when it comes to serious on here nowadays, but I'll bite the hook this time.  I'm not sure exactly where I am but here are some thoughts which might be a little bit contradictory.

"act on here how you would if you were in a pub with people you maybe didn't know all that well" - still leaves open the question of the extent to which you bite your lip because you don't know who will overhear.

That said there is a line probably... I was a little unsure about the 'gas' pun, but am much more comfortable with my own auschwitz one.  Is that logical?

Given that one can quickly make the link from gas to auschwitz to hitler to nazis to fascism I'm tempted to say that there is no line - if you're prepared to make jokes about fascism then you risk offending people - and if you're in an environment where jokes about fascism are acceptable then you're in an environment where anything goes.

Actually scratch that, I'll stand by my gut feel that "if you're in an environment where jokes about fascism are acceptable then you're in an environment where anything goes, up until the point where you're making jokes about the details of the process of genocide". But maybe that's just self-justification.
