I don't agree Clack - having a back three means you use the extra wide player, the days of a three at the back with a ball carrying centre back are long gone. Those that play it in the world cup used the central midfielder as the out ball, and the full backs, or wing backs provided the extra man in midfield and width whilst also providing defensive cover when defending.
No, three at the back means you have 2 less wide players (you just have two wing backs as opposed to two full backs and two wide midfielders/wingers)

Three at the back came back at this World Cup because the managers knew that most teams were going back to playing 2 up-front again.

But at least one of the centre backs must be able to bring the ball out from the back - teams simply wouldn't be able to build play and go forward without that (you would have too many players bunched together if midfielders have to come back to pick the ball off 3 centre backs - unless you revert to hoof ball)
