Hack, you think Jimenez will be played up front? More Berkovic I've heard...

Napoleon that gives me a semi..if he is as good as Berkovic I'll be so happy.
Could (raspy)Himinez and Mancini be my Berko and Sincs of my later 30's. |

As I've mentioned before, I'm told he likes to play the Sheringham-style role - sitting deeper than the target man and feeding off the knockdowns. He
is also allegedly a Berko/Beny-style spotter of passes...

Mancini is described as a winger in most of the reports I've read, so I don't think we should just assume that Zola wants to play without width?
Maybe Zola's played that way so far because he hasn't had any decent wide players at his disposal? Monk / Hack - Jiminez, from what I can gather from the Chileans, has always played the "Berkovic role" as a free man behind front two (at least for Chile, anyway). That's a common position in South America, which kids are taught from a young age, but it has also featured a lot in Italian football over the years (Triquista they call, or something like that?) - Baggio, Zola's old team-mate, the most obvious example. I think with Zola it's going to be more about a style of play than actual formation. The best managers, IMHO, do not have a rigid formation, but look for quality players and find the best formation that best suits those players. |

Dunno, if that's a wind up, or you're fishing there, amocs, but I do find it funny how we consistently disagree on everything, football-wise.
Obviously, I thought Berkovic was a good player for us, and I enjoyed his style of play. And Ron Greenwood's ideas (that you've stated you hate) are and probably the starting point of all my whole outlook on football! But, strangely, I find I agree with, almost 100%, on just about every other subject outside of football. |

I hate players like Berkovic and Etherington.
I love players like Brooking and Devonshire. What is the difference? Heart. |

Berkovic compared to Brooking..Etherington to Devonshire...harsh..Noble with Bonds ?...Collins with Martin?
Oldies on this site love battlers hardworking honest types, the young handsome bucks love a bit of skill romance and funk. Moxy you hate Kanoute, you turned on Paolo at the first opportunity, you hate Bishop, you hate Berko..there's something in you that hates flash, hates an ego, hates the unpredictable yet talented. I'd guess Colly over KP, Cook over Bopara, Tindall over Guscott, Rob Andrew over Barnes, Martin over Gale, Taylor over Imran Sherwani. |

KP over Colly, Cook and Bops both please, Guscott over Tindall, Rob Andrew over the flamboyant but useless (and bitter) Barnes every fucking time, Martin over
Gale. Sean Kerly for me.
It's not about liking graft over grace. It's about hating cowards and shirkers like your mate Matty. That's not the same thing at all. |

Lake Palmer aka Monk wrote:That is because as a West Ham supporter I saw season after a season of dogshit from players lauded as the best in the country - nothing to do with flair, everything to do with a lack of professionalism. Colly and KP is no comparison, nor are Cook and Bopara. But I'd have Bopara over Pietersen every time - nothing to do with flamboyance, everything to do with brains. Tindall and Guscott played two different positions - respectively inside and outside centre. World of difference. Guscott was a far superior player in his position to Tindall. A better comparison would have been Guscott and Carling. I always called for Barnes over Andrew - with the latter England only played with half their team. Martin over Gale? Hell yeah - although they were similar, Alvin was a better player. Don't know anything about hockey, despite a trial for England schoolboys I gave it up aged 17. What Surface said...

A few things from my distant memory I'd like to add to the debate.
1. Reddnapp. Each year at Forest Gate HS, we'd have a West Ham player as our coach during our training sessions. Cushley, DeAth and Saggy to name but a few. He gave me and my fellow team mates fuck all in terms of coaching, rather, he'd tell us to run 25 laps of a course whilst he stood on the side line having a fag. Nice. 2. Brooking. I fucking worship the ground the man walks on. But, when he was pushing for a first team place in his early days, on hearing his name called in the starting lineup, there would be a collective moan around the ground. Now, this was probably due to the fact they played him up front and he wasn't very good plus the fact he kept falling over. Thankfully it all came good in the end. 3. Greenwood. Stock answer to any question from a journo "No comment". |

Fair enough...it wasn't though about a direct like for like, more about what they represent for example Collingwood team orientated, gratfer, selfless. KP
self centered, lazy, flash yet pure talent. Cook solid, gets his 80 odd no problem,a bit ugly but usually delivers- Bopara wristy, Usian bolt practised
celebrations, hasn't fufilled potential, unliked by others in the team flash yet with pure talent...
But Bopara over KP is a huge shout though. Never for me. Surface not just with matty but your not prepared to indulge the shirking in return for the good bits. I am. As a good bit from a DiCanio is to me worth 10 Boa Morte whole hearted tackle backs. (after he's been caught out dozing up field of course). Everyone loved Hockey in 92' I'm off to bed, dreaming of a Mancini triple stepover. |

I'll tell you what, as much as I hated Berkovic and the like I loved the later incarnation of Brooking. No fancy Dan him.
Professional, hugely competitive, almost impossible to dispossess, good with either foot and looked to make make three or four goalscoring chances every game... |

By and large I'd agree with Amocs over Berkovic, but I was at Derby for the infamous Andy Impey game when he played at the last minute and we won 2-0. He
had his moments away from home. I'll be interested to see how Zola incorporates a non tackling flair type into the side as a lot of our away success last
year seemed to be built on a well organised defensive set up that began with the strikers.
Great to see Imran Sherwani get a long overdue mention on here. |

Berkovic went to Celtic after leaving West Ham.
Glasgow Radio had a phone-in asking fans to name the Celtic stand that had just been completed. A Rangers fan phoned in and said ' you should call it the Eyal Berkovic Stand' 'Why is that?' said the puzzled presenter. 'Because it's reasonably useful when you play at home and completly fucking useless when you are away' True story |
