Meanwhile, players sold are, erm... sold. That sounds like asset stripping to me.

Its how teams like Villareal in Spain made the step up from where they were to where they are. When you have made the step, thats when you ivest in players, not the other way round. Unless you are Man City and have a seemingly endless pot of money of course. IMO of course. (*winks at Hack and Monk)

If it was, everyone would do it and there would be no-one left to take on loan. That is already happening. It can be a good short term strategy in addition to the permanent acquisition of players. Or it could be an asset-stripping technique.

If you let him go, your ambition and future prospects are shown by the quality of his replacement. Last season's loan players: Tristan and Kovac. Both released. This year's loan players: Jiminez and (well, we keep our fingers crossed on that one). I'm guessing we'll be seeing a significant imporvement on last season's squad. And we're improving within our budget and at vastly lower cost than clubs like Man City and the Totts. Surely that's all we can realistically ask for...

No selling club would willing agree to do the 'buy on one year's approval' thing. So you are scraping the bottom of the pond in the hope of finding a gem.

Tevez for example, loaned out for three years at least. Don't forget that hardly any club in the world at the moment can keep players on if they are not absolutely necessary apart from the biggest and those that have private money. And players being who they are want to be playing. A club like ours who can pay decent loan fees and offer first team football is ideally placed to pick up those who are up and coming (or to be fair, also down and going) who are not quite good enough to compete with galacticos but who are good enough for a top half team.

The ones left over after the best ones have been bought outright. Tevez is a red herring, as you well know.

Not only that, but after 10 odd years of the silly money our record purchase is still just only 7.5 million. I won't be thanking any suit at West Ham, too quickly.

When the summer transfer window closes, I wager there will be fewer than 6 or 7 clubs who will have spent any real money on new players. Other than the top four and the usual wannabees (villa, ManC, Everton and the scum) no one has big money. To progress, all the other clubs must rely on talent over cash. We must have the better manager/coach/suits if we are to continue moving up the table. And, just for the moment, it seems we might have exactly that. Zola/Clarke had a very impressive first season and will hopefully get better with age; Nani has proven himself a pretty good finder of players; BG (and hopefully now Stramur) showed he knows how to run a club without running a team. Rather than make us weaker, I'd say West Ham's loan deals and transfer policy have made us stronger. Our income goes on paying wages rather than throwing £15-20million out of the window to sign a player. And let's not forget, we also have one major source of players not available to most other clubs: The Academy. Eight Academy players represented the first team last season with a ninth appearing on the bench. That's an astronomical saving on transfer fees. God knows, I might be totally wrong again. But it is my view loan deals are the way forward. And we just happen to have become good at it earlier than most other clubs...

Since then we have been treading water lurching from one bout of instability to another. As Flash has alluded too, this club has always generated large amounts of money leaving aside SKY money etc yet we never have a pot to piss in. Until all the deadwood that has run this club like a drunk runs a pub are finally got shot of I doubt they can fully gain the trust of the fanbase. The Henri Camara barrell scraping loan, and the young international that cant break into one of the best teams in Europe loan in the Jimenez, hopefully Mancini mould. BG and seemed Eggy seemed a dream ticket. But Tom my, Monk, Moxy et al proved to be correct and Eggy was a virus, slowly killing us. BG, however, brings nothing but praise from me for the way he turned it around once he'd sacked Eggy. Now we are somehow back on an even keel. We run at an operating profit, our debts are manageable and we can pay good wages. What we can't do is match the tens of millions the top group can spend to buy players. And that's where the loan system comes in. What's the betting the scum will spend another £100million this summer and end up with new players no better than our loanees?...

Look at Ilunga, we knew fuck all, turns out to be great and we buy... What if you buy a player, give him a 4 year contract and good wages. He turns out to be shit, or homesick or whatever. So you have bought him, which has cost you, you have to pay him and keep him, as there are not many European Clubs that can match the English wages. Plus, what SD says, the player has to bring out to best to earn his contract.
