Monk, it doesn't really matter to be honest - that's why he watches it; switch off from work time. Maybe it's the compelling thing that allows him to switch off from work. BTW, I don't buy into the notion that only stupid people watch it, I know many who watch it who are far from stupid and hold down excellent jobs.

Totally with AMOCS on this. It is humiliation television sold on the idea that you can succeed without the tiresome step of putting the graft in (at least
Mariah Carey has to marry David Geffen). And totally fake. Which is the one that divides them into groups of 8? X factor or pop Idol? Dunno, don't care.
A neighbour inflicted one episode on me (in return for being fed, to be fair). They were setting up the groups, except it was two of 8 and one of 7. Then Simon whicheverone started agonising over a contestant who was going to be chucked. Chucked her. He burst out "I don't like this" and they rush down to stop her at the exit door. Ta da! 3 groups of 8. Totally. Fucking. Fraudulent. Drama. Neither my neighbour nor his wife noticed that all they had done was exactly what was always intended, but with added emotional torture for the girl. |

It was a good point made earlier that talent shows are as old as the hills - this is just the current model.
Opportunity Knocks etc. It's pretty obvious Cowell models himself on Mickie Most, the record producer panellist on New Faces. Skerritt is dead right about family viewing though - it really did work on that level for us. |

Although X Factor is undoubtedly modelled on the talent show format, I think it's disingenuous to claim that's all it is (if that's what you were
doing).
I don't recall people humiliating themselves to get on Opportunity Knocks or being humiliated while on Small Faces. We lived in a less cynical world without the manipulation on so many levels that exist now. Frankly, I think the show is a condensate of everything that is wrong about the cultural shift from then to now. And yes, there have been good things along the way - it's just a shame so few are are on view in this excuse for "entertainment...." |

I don't like the way reality TV shows exploit mentally ill people - it happens in the early audition stages of X Factor/American Idol etc and is the
central device in How Clean Is Your House.
But X Factor once it gets to the studio phase is to me just a talent show like its forerunners - albeit a more glitzily produced model. |

As far as I recall (and my memory may be hazy here) Opportunity Knocks and Small Faces were talent shows. People with talent went on them. X Factor it seems to me, is an opportunity only for the public to "have their say" on which of a group of carefully vetted "personalities" who don't write their own songs, can barely sing and don't play a musical instrument they most or (more importantly) least like. Talent comes a massively long way behind Simon Cowell making money... |
