It's primarily a vehicle for Cowell to make money? Well I'm blowed, that never occurred to me

Singing talent contest. The last two winners can actually sing, not my musical taste especially, but technically very adept.
They sing popular music. And because they have a big backing and huge exposure (and can sing) they are popular. I think you're trying to make a nice distinction when to do so is pretty pointless. Manufactured acts didn't start with Pop Idol - remember the Monkees? And I'm sure you could go back way further than that. People can actually watch X Factor and The Thick of It and enjoy both - I've done exactly that tonight (although X factor was pretty poor tonight). Just like I can read say Robert Harris and Philip Roth and enjoy both (for different reasons granted) |

Oh come on Ralph, surely you don'e believe that.
These shows are a glorified kareoke. They carry on the Stock Aitken Warteman tradition that just about anyone can be manufactured into a star (including, for a short time, the truly dreadful Mrs Frank Lampard Jnr). After a couple of decades of bilge of various flavours there are finally young bands coming through on both sides of the Atlantic with genuine talent and originality who can actually play. Do you really believe they deserve to be eclipsed by any of the X-factor contestants who would never have made it off their own back? Having said all that, Go Stacey!

If that's the case Ralph, why all the fuss on Facebook and elsewhere about how horrible the Twins are?
And if it's really about talent, could you explain why it is that after the debut single the acts tend to do so poorly in the "real" world? As Ian says it's reality TV karaoke dressed up as talent show... |

Over the history of X factor there has been about 3 acts with actual X Factor but what Cowell is producing/unearthing is not so much somebody with X factor but
somebody with the ability to get to number 1.
But anyway fair point on it being popularity rather than talent contest, so thank fuck he's Britains got Talent to readdress the balance. |

well like Big Brother this 'entertainment' format is slowly losing its popularity and with any luck will be dying a death not a moment too soon.
Its lazy television at worst and absolute utter dog shit at best, I cant stand any reality tv (I may have mentioned this before)...everyone wants to be famous for errr...being famous. All thats wrong with this country in my opinion. |

Does "Come Dine with Me" count as reality TV? Because I quite like that.

I thought The Ghost was OK-ish.
I liked Pompeii and Imperium (first of a trilogy of novels about Cicero) |

My dad recommended The Ghost to me. Not bad, but nothing special. Saw the twist coming a mile off.

Back on X Factor just for a mo. Isn't the merit vs popularity debate really the same one that exists in social media?
Some people think it is important how many facebook friends or twitter followers they have accrued (or ITBS posts they have put up) rather than whether they have anything interesting to say. X Factor is no more pernicious than social media - maybe less. |

This site is so dead I may answer Ralphs above point. His probing piece of social commentary has left its mark on me.
I've only got 5 twitter followers and it hurts. But I've got over 300 facebook friends (301) all of whom I'm very close to you and that makes me feel great. I also like X Factor but don't vote BUT I don't like politics but I vote. How totally pernicious is that ? Hopefully that has helped fuel a lively and interesting debate till home time. |
