Hines reminds me of Defoe a little - got that natural goalscorer, make a goal out of nothing, look about him - looks like Tony Carr's uncovered another gem there (let's hope we can keep hold of him for at least a couple of seasons) Hines has been impressive before, but that's the first time I've seen him leading the line as the out and out striker - where he played in the youths and reserves I believe? - and that does look very much like his natural postion (in previous 1st team appearences, he's played behind C.Cole, or in a wider role) Franco - effective second striker - it's almost as if you feel we could cope adequately without Carlton Cole. My only gripe is that I thought some of our football was too frantic and hurried at times. We've got the skill, so there's no need for that. Last Edited By: Clack 05/11/09 06:48:56. Edited 1 times.

Atmosphere sounded good on the TV, right from the start. The more midweek league matches, and less early Sunday afternoon kick offs the better? Also, I thought Clarke's appearence on Sky, and subsequent comments in the papers was quite Pardewesque - ie. getting the crowd up for the match.

Hines is totally ace! He's one of these that can get a shot out before the defender realises. Wants a shot the whole time as well.

And the switch of feet for Hines goal was as masterful as Noble's earlier attempt was clumsy and slow. That said, apart from set pieces where he constantly hits the first defender, I thought Noble had a better game than of late.

I thought we were absolutely dreadful in the first half (), and for us to go in 1-0 up covered a multitude of sins. We looked totally bereft of ideas until Franco put Hines in for the penalty and such was the regression in our ambition after Cole went off I thought it was more like he had been sent off than injured. The atmosphere reflected that too. That said, second half we improved greatly and Villa faded badly. Their goal was a fluke and in the end we were their equal, but a draw would have been a fair result. Da Costa gave the kind of performance I have waited all season for Upson to give. Took no shit whatsoever. Very impressive (except for his distribution, which was Ruddockian) () I missed the first few minutes due to the ever wonderful Underground service and apparently we started alright.

We deserved to loose based on our first half display. Franco, dispite being slow, is a bloody good footballer. Hines is like a wasp. I love him. Green showed the kind of form we need him to for once. DaCosta is a nightmare waiting to happen. Collison is to good for us.

Mind you when Hines goal went in we were both jumping up and down and cuddling like old times. Thought Da Costa had a good game and the penalty was a joke, but for me Collinson looked class and Hines was a menace from the moment he came on. Frigtened people with his pace and was willing to shoot at every sniff, some times to the detriment of his teamates but if yoy dont buy a ticket. Roll on Sunday looks like i'm going to miss the roast dinner though

What people heard on the TV was Villa singing about how our suppoert was shit and we were going down. It got no response. the crowd were waiting for the team to lift them. Green was a lot more like what we expect, still not 100% on crosses but better than recently. Spector did far better than I thought he would after he came on. Costa is excellent in the air, made several good tackles and blocks. Need to see more of him to form a real view, was this a one off? Faubert is no defender and first half was totally bereft of any confidence. He got the ball and delivered poor crosses never attacking the space in front of him. Someone must have had a word at half time as second half was far better. Noble had one of his better games again in the second half, went missing ten minutes into the first. Behrami also poor first half, kept givng the ball away, lot better in the second. Colison and Parker were standouts in the midfield but Parker has to stop this booking a game trait he has got into. Franco showed excellent awareness, warming to him as a player. Hines showed why we were prepared to let Sears go on loan, he has huge potential. Quick over the first few yards, fast feet and a workaholic. Goal was a huge boost for both the team and him as he has had a few chances in the league before and not taken them which might have got to his confidence. Hopefully neither injury will not be too bad as we will need both Cole and Illunga. End of the day though brilliant result and then the Yankees win No.27 - superb evening when all is said and done.

I have to say though, we're reaping the rewards for being more patient with players. Back when Redknapp was manager, most of these kids would already be in the lower divisions. Hines has been a raw talent in the reserves for the last couple of years and now he seems to have the poise to go along with the athletic gifts he's always had.

Atmosphere lacklustre first half with usual screamed inanities from the usual suspects around me until the penalty save whereupon it perked up a bit. As regarding Clarke, I really enjoyed him metaphorically smashing Bernard Cribbins a big fat one on his already horribly disfigured snout. One more thing: Just finished Jonathan Wilson's book "Inverting the Pyramid". Decent book that despite being about tactics indulges itself far too much in the history surrounding them and too little on the actual tactics themselves. Good for you for getting a credit, though...

Baseball is a fantastic sport, occupying the same sort of cultural space as cricket does for us. It also makes (largely futile) attempts to ensure that every team playing the game has a chance to win. Which I respect as a fan of a sport that does everything it can to ensure that very few teams have a chance to win.
