If cress well and Downing could put the yards in we could so benefit from having the extra striker without losing a body in central midfield.Monk - I think you're underestimating the technical ability of Pearce and Stimac, who had both played at the top level (even Ruddock played for England!) - the problem with all 3 was that they were slow by the time they played to us, but Pearce and Stimac certainly still knew how to play a pass. But I don't think those 3 ever played together, anyway? - we had Rio, the ultimate stepper-upper, in the middle of the back 3 for most of the time we played that system - it was only the last 5 months of Harry's last season that we played a 3 without Rio (he was sole in the Novemeber and replaced by Song, who, in theory, was meant to be another ball-playing defender). Harry was going to switch to 4-4-2 the following season had he stayed, which he explained in an end of season interview. But if you're suggesting playing a 3 of Reid, Collins, Tomkins to carry on playing long balls then what's the point of having 3 and not 2 - the whole point of the system is to have a centre back who can bring the ball out?Cresswell can attack from the full back postion, anyway? And I'm not sure Downing would have enough in him defensively to operate as a wing-back, a very demanding postion?

Those that play it in the world cup used the central midfielder as the out ball, and the full backs, or wing backs provided the extra man in midfield and width whilst also providing defensive cover when defending.
