As was the subtlety with which Downing mugged-off their keeper.Made easier by the fact Valencia had kept up with play and was there waiting for a tap in - their keep pretty much let Downing score because to have focused 100% on downing would have lead to a pass and Valencia goal instead. I'm still trying to work out what Nolan offered / offers. Can someone please tell me what he did well yesterday / ever*? * other than the goals

Can't Recognise A Footballer
Robbo Di Robbio wrote:If you can't see what Nolan brings to the team it's likely that you don't watch games properly. He is always available for the second shot if the main striker misses, and he is a massive influence on the team. He isn't scoring as much this season mainly because the strikers we have are doing a much more effective job but he is still there in case. Obviously he's not getting any younger, and his time will pass but he has been massive. It seems that there are two main views on this. There is the view that we should play Morrison because he has flair, let's get a day out at the FA cup even if we get relegated because we can win more games in the CCC, never mind the fact that we are much higher up the league this year and Allardyce is ruining the West Ham way. Against that there is the belief that results in the PL are incomparably more important than winning the cup, every place we finish up the table is an achievement, relegation would be a total disaster and players like Nolan are crucial elements of team spirit. It is possible I am in a very small minority in agreeing with Hodgson that Mascherano is at least as important to a club's success as Ronaldo or Messi. But we are where we are because of Nolan and the other BFS signings not despite it.

I think, at times, his captaincy of the team, particularly during the promotion season has been excellent and whilst he may no longer be worthy of an automatic starting place he still offers good leadership when he is on the pitch. Still is vocal at the ref (not saying that's right but sadly it is something that a team needs), still provides a physical presence and still offers the role of 'bloke you don't fuck with'. The spat between Noble and Tomkins during the Everton replay looked like it could easily get out of hand before he intervened is a recent eg.

Lampard doesn't either yet he has been possibly the best in his class for nearly 15 years. So he doesn't seem to tackle much (he does), find space (he does) or work hard (and even if he did you ignore it)? I give up.

No longer worthy of an automatic starting place - agreed. still offers good leadership when he is on the pitch - agreed. He is a reasonable body in the middle of the park when better players are not available. He offers the bulldog spirit and captains role is noble is not playing - I just about buy that. But other than that and goalscoring what does he bring? He is not in the team for his dribbling, movement, tackling, speed of thought, ability on the ball, short passing / retaining possession, or his ability to play a great final ball. I wouldn't have been booing had I been there, I'm not saying that Nolan shouldn't have been picked. I am saying that for all the good BFS has done it is a shame that Nolan gets as many minutes as he does.

No matter what you think Nolan can't do or doesn't do he is in a team that has won 3 nil. Its a team game, at the top level of sport everybody has to contribute or you don't win 3 nil. Fred you need to accept that you can't see what Nolan did yesterday. You have to admit you're clueless over his contribution. You have to question your self over everything you see on a football pitch , everything you understand about football. Its gonna be a tough few days of introspection I guess.

I don't think anyone has him down as an automatic starter but I think he has a very important role to play in most games. I'd expect him to play more minutes than he misses. Song, Downing, Adrian and Carroll are the automatic starters for me.
